With a revolutionary sense of instrumental colour and a fleeting, atmospheric sound world, he is often described, rightly or wrongly,
as an "Impressionist" composer.

- Composed the atmospheric and well-known piano piece Claire de lune
- Often described as an "Impressionist" composer

- Once said of himself "With me, everything is instinctive and unreasoning. I'm not totally master of myself."
- He was strongly influenced by the French Symbolist poets Verlaine and Mallarmé
